Implant Supported Dentures vs. Removable Dentures
Portland, OR

Due to their realistic look, full function and longevity, dental implants are a highly popular choice for replacing missing teeth. Implant supported dentures boast a superb level of form and function.

Implant supported dentures outshine traditional removable dentures in many ways. When you get removable dentures, your chewing ability improves by about fifteen percent. However, implant supported dentures improve chewing ability by up to one hundred percent.

Fixed vs. Removable Implant Supported Dentures

Patients can also choose between fixed and removable implant supported dentures.

Fixed Implant Supported Dentures

Fixed implant supported dentures need more implants than removable implant supported dentures because the former is permanently attached to the top of the implants and thus needs more stability. Implant supported dentures also have a more natural feel and are far better at chewing than removable dentures.

Removable Implant Supported Dentures

Removable implant supported dentures don’t need as many implants to stay in place. Four posts will securely hold the upper denture, permitting adjustment or even removal of the plate size. By removing or reducing the plate, the prosthetic teeth will feel more natural and aid the tasting of food.

The lower denture is held firm by only two implants, which increase chewing ability to up to ninety percent. If we use four implants, such as the All-On-4 treatment concept, that number can go up to one hundred percent. Removable dentures are also easier to clean and maintain.

Implant Supported Dentures vs. Traditional Removable Dentures

Implant supported dentures, and removable dentures have several considerable differences for you to consider when making your choice about tooth restoration.

Level of Confidence

Dentures often slip if the adhesives wear off, negatively affecting the patient’s speaking and eating capabilities. Implant supported dentures do not have this problem since they are permanently attached to the jaw bone. If we place them properly, dental implants and implant supported dentures will work just like normal teeth, which are just a few of the benefits of dental implants.

Level of Comfort

Denture users often deal with some level of discomfort. This is due to the gum tissues shrinking as the patient gets older, loosening up the dentures. If loosened, a denture can lead to mouth sores and irritation of the gums. We need to make adjustments to dentures to account for this shrinkage of the jaw bone and gums.

The dental adhesive used to secure the dentures is often messy. The upper dentures also diminish the taste of food since they cover the palate. Dental implants, however, are permanently fixed, aesthetically pleasing and fully functional. They don’t have any of the drawbacks of conventional dentures and allow you to bite and chew as you would with your regular teeth.

Level of Durability

Dentures can last a lifetime, but since they slip and can’t stop bone loss or gum shrinkage, we need to maintain them actively. If the gums shrink, we’ll likely have to refit or replace the denture. Implant supported dentures avoid these issues by preserving bone and gum tissue and avoiding denture slippage.

Cost

We can craft dentures rather speedily. Implants, however, are more costly, but they more than makeup for this with their appearance, durability, and functionality. If you choose removable dentures, you may experience gum shrinkage and need additional appointments, adjustments, and replacements. However, patients who choose implant supported dentures don’t suffer bone or gum loss and won’t have to put up with additional costs for continued maintenance.
