The Risks of Dental Implants

Millions of people in America receive dental implants to replace missing teeth or anchor an entire set of dentures. A dental implant procedure involves implanting titanium screws in the jawbone that serve as posts for holding the false teeth. Sometimes, before the procedure, you may need bone grafts and pulling of teeth. Although the American Dental Association says that most implant surgeries are successful, the ones that are not successful may need another complex and costly procedure of removing the implants. Potential Implants Risks

There may be a risk of having the implants not properly fuse with the bone. For implants to secure firmly in place, they need to bond with the bone, a process known as osseointegration. An implant may fail to take to the bone for various reasons, including insufficient bone density, teeth grinding, pre-existing conditions such as diabetes that impairs the bonding process, and other causes such as trauma. We evaluate your overall health and bone structure to see that you are fit for implant placement.

A form of gum disease referred to as peri-implantitis can affect the success of dental implants. Chances of having peri-implantitis are reduced if you stop smoking, maintain good oral hygiene, and live a healthy lifestyle. This infection spreads deeper within the gum tissues surrounding the implants because the implants do not have gum attachments as those found in real teeth. These attachments supply a form of collagen barrier that helps slow down the spread of gum infection. Without timely treatment, peri-implantitis can easily infect the bone supporting the implants, weakening the bone's connection with the implants.
