Following Oral Surgery, You Need to Make Sure to Keep Your Mouth Clean

Following Oral Surgery, You Need to Make Sure to Keep Your Mouth CleanAfter undergoing an oral surgery procedure, we will provide you with guidance on how to keep the area clean. It is vital to keep oral surgery sites clean from bacteria, as it could lead to infection. Here are some tips on how to take care of the surgery site to help your recovery.

Taking Care of Your Mouth Post-Surgery

For the first 24 hours following your surgery, you shouldn't rinse your mouth unless we specifically told you otherwise. After this period, it is important to then rinse your mouth with warm salt water, around 4 times a day. By following a strict routine of rinsing your mouth after eating, this will help to keep the surgical site clean from food debris.

While it is vital to your healing to keep your mouth clean, you should be careful when brushing your teeth. When following your normal oral care, you need to stay away from the surgical sites for the first 7 days, at least. This will allow the area to heal without disruption.

After any oral surgery procedure, alcohol should be avoided for the first 24 hours. If you can keep your intake of alcohol to a minimum for longer, then this would be beneficial too. If you consume alcohol while your mouth is still trying to heal it could interfere and prolong the process.

Lastly, it's important for your mouths healing for you to not allow your mouth to dry out. Alcohol dries out your mouth and if this happens, it may stop a blood clot from forming. The surgical site needs to be able to form a stable blood clot, if this is prevented then you may get a dry socket which will prolong the healing in most instances.

If you have recently had oral surgery and are concerned with how to keep the area clean, contact our office. Our team will be able to advise you on how to take care of your mouth while it's healing.
