Times When an Oral Splint Becomes Necessary

Oral splints are commonly used to correct bruxism. Bruxism is the word for constant teeth grinding carried out during the day. Grinding of the teeth can be catastrophic to your teeth if not corrected. It is normal to see people who grind their teeth daily experience cracks and chips in their teeth from doing so. Bruxism is also very bad for your jaw muscle and many sufferers develop a disorder known as TMJ or TMD. TMJ and TMD are both disorders of the jaw muscle that helps open and close the mouth. In the early stages, the jaw muscle will become constantly sore, and at the later stages, the mouth may be very difficult to use.

When bruxism has gone unchecked and caused TMD, we may suggest the sufferer use an oral splint. Oral splints are made of plastic and they help protect the teeth and jaws from the effects of teeth grinding. They can be worn all day, but must be taken out while eating.

Splints Can Help With Bite Alignment

Oral splints can also be necessary for people who have a severely misaligned bite. When a bite is misaligned, the teeth are constantly rubbing each other similarly to how the teeth grind against one another in cases of TMJ and TMD. In the instances of misaligned bites, oral splints can be an effective measure at preventing damage until the bit can be corrected. Because correcting a bit not always be possible, some people use oral splints throughout their lives.
