Can TMJ Be Fixed?

Posted on 4/10/2023 by Malmquist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Can TMJ Be Fixed? If you are having issues with your temporomandibular joint (TMJ), you may be experiencing TMJ disorder, which is often called TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder). TMJ disorders affect 10 million adults in the United States each year. Here are some suggestions to fix your TMJ disorder.

Your Jaw Joint

The TMJ is a very important joint in your body. It operates very much like a sliding hinge, which allows your upper and lower jaws to work properly. It is this joint that makes your mouth open and close, which means you can sing, laugh, eat, drink, and talk with other people. If you put your fingers in front of your ears, you should be able to feel the jaw joint.

What Can Happen to Your Jaw Joint

As fabulous as your jaw joint is, you may still run into problems with it. First, you can dislocate your jaw joint due to trauma to your jaw, such as an accident or an injury, such as a baseball hitting your jaw. Even if surgeons fix your jaw, you may still have pain and stiffness due to the injury. Dentists may be able to suggest anti-inflammatory medications and exercises for you to try to relieve your jaw pain.

Also, if you have bruxism, you may experience jaw pain and swelling. Bruxism is the clenching and grinding of your teeth at night. If your bruxism is severe, you can cause jaw pain. Luckily, you can fix bruxism through night guards, which dentists can make for you.

You may also be experiencing jaw pain because of sinus or ear problems due to allergies or sinusitis. If this is the reason for your jaw pain, doctors can prescribe you medications to treat infections and allergies to reduce your jaw pain.

One of your first steps if you are experiencing jaw pain needs to be with a dentist. They can help you figure out your jaw pain, and help you feel better as quickly as possible.
